The La’al Ratty

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England. It is affectionately and locally known as ‘La’al Ratty’, which means ‘little railway’ in the old Cumbrian dialect. The line was originally built in 1873 and boasts a fascinating history. Within walking distance of The Grove, The Old WIne Store, and the Walled Garden Glamping, you can see the Ratty for yourself.

The Roman Bath House in Ravenglass

The remains of the bath house of Ravenglass Roman fort, established in AD 130, are among the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain – the walls stand almost four metres high. The fort at Ravenglass (whose earthworks can be seen near the bath house) guarded what was probably a useful harbour, and there is evidence that soldiers stationed here served in Hadrian’s fleet. This attraction is within walking distance of The Grove, the Old Wine Store and the Walled Garden Glamping Pods!

Eskdale Mill

Eskdale Mill is a rare survival of a traditional watermill and drying kiln. It is the last remaining working water-powered corn mill in the Lake District National Park. The mill is at the centre of an intimate huddle of buildings on the north side of the fast-flowing Whillan Beck. It meets the moorland at the edge of Boot. The buildings and their setting create an authentic historic atmosphere. Many original features and working parts survive. Alterations and improvements in technology over time are reflected in how the Mill developed.

Stanley Ghyll Waterfall

A lovely walk up Stanley Ghyll leads to one of the most beautiful Lakeland waterfalls. The vegetation here is so lush in summer that it seems almost tropical. Start at the parking area near the Dalegarth terminus of the popular Eskdale railway, and follow the waymarked trail through pleasant woodland to the banks of the Ghyll.

Hardknott Roman Fort

This remote and dramatically-sited fort was founded under Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd century. Well-marked remains include the headquarters building, commandant’s house, and bath house. The site of the parade ground survives beside the fort, and the road which Hardknott guarded can be traced for some distance as an earthwork.

Ravenglass Beaches

The beaches around Ravenglass are a sight to behold, and are excellent hotspots on a summer day. Come out for a tan or to enjoy a soak and enjoy the many idyllic beachfront cafes.
